Nancy and Family: I grew up with John, and we went through school together. What a time to grow up in Buckhannon. John's personality is woven through so many recollections of classes and activities, but I hav always remembered his sense of humor and that smile on his face when something went either right or wrong. Like many, we had lost touch over the years, but I know that he and Nancy were always around Buckhannon, doing the things that they do. I wish we had stayed in touch, but life often takes many of us in different directions, and I guess that is what growing up is all about... learning your direction and going with it. I'll miss John. I'll miss knowing that he is holding down the fort of our shared hometown. I'll remember his legacy, and yes, I will tell stories of him... some of which I have heard or read recently. He is a good guy. Thomas Beer, Kennesaw, GA

John Brent was one of my closest friends in grade school and junior high, before we moved away. He along with Raymond, Rose, and Julia often made me feel like I was family. We had great times with other kids on Victoria Hill. We played a lot of football and I guess JB developed some of his persuasive skills as we argued about the placement of the football after many downs. The two of us explored many woods and streams together. I'm ashamed to admit that we would try to get Dr. Almond's goat while pretending to play tag in his coveted strawberry patch (always careful to not step on a single plant). JB had an impish sense of humor. I often fell prey to his sincere concern about whether or not I could pull off some daring deed. I would always rise to the bait and perform some act of stupidity. We loved to hunt and fish together. Most of the time he was more successful with his advanced skills. When I wrote "When Autumn's Leaving Town" on my second CD it was he and Raymond that I was referring to when I said: "I remember how happy I would be, to go out with my buddy and his dad. To watch the sun rise through snow and trees, just getting out would make me oh so glad!". I was with JB when he got his first deer -- a buck with a handsome rack. I know John Brent is now in a great place with loved ones. And I know that I'll see him there some day. But right now the world seems a little bit lonelier place now with him gone.

Nancy and kids, you know our crew on Victoria Hill was like no other, we were truly raised by our village. Whether sledding on our back hill or baseball at Almond’s we always knew every family had each other back. Although I was usually inside playing school because I was the youngest in the crew. JB was always at our house playing basketball, red rover, tag or whatever game the crew made up. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the kids in your time of sorrow. Just know we’ve got your back!

Ruth Almond Wiewiora writes: Growing up on West Victoria Hill we children had two groups of playmates. I was the oldest of the younger group.
In the summer we would be outside running and playing all over the acres and acres. JB’s mom, Rose , would call him home for supper. I can still hear in my imagination her calling “ John Brent, John Brent”
We all would head to our homes for supper. If longer days we would be outside for a while afterwards to play hide and seek or soft ball in our Almond yard.
I also remember that JB loved watermelon. If that was our family’s dessert, he could smell it before dad even cut it out on the picnic table.
What a wonderful childhood we all had with all the parents giving us room to roam but all keeping an eye on us.
May he be experiencing the joy of heaven with Jesus our Lord.
