Obituary of Dorothy May Bennett

Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Dorothy May Anderson Bennett of Buckhannon, WV on March 2, 2024, at the home of her daughter in Newburg, WV.  Mom was a Christian by faith and has earned her Heavenly Wings! She was born January 9, 1928, in Wolf Summit, Harrison County, West Virginia.  A daughter of the late James Thomas Anderson and Ivy Myrtle Keller Anderson.  On August 30, 1945, she married the love of her life James Atwell Bennett who preceded her in death on October 7, 1990. Dorothy is survived by three daughters.  Imogene “Sis” Watkins (Jerry) of Statesville, NC, Betty Bolyard (Richard) of Newburg, WV, Patricia Bennett of Hodgesville, WV.  Son in law Larry Williams of Tunnelton, WV and daughter in law Helen Wilfong Bennett of Statesville, NC.  Adopted son, Mike McCartney of Buckhannon, WV.  She was blessed with 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter Doris Marie Williams; sons, Ralph Eugene Bennett and William Edward Bennett; granddaughter, Danielle Hope Bolyard; brothers, Leslie Anderson, Robert Anderson, Richard Anderson, Guy Howard Anderson and sisters, Marie Thompson, Rosalee Moore, and Josephine Long. Caring for people was one of her passions.  She worked many years assisting patients at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Preston Memorial Hospital, Hopemont Hospital, and Saint Joes.  A good work ethic that she passed on to her children.  Dorothy was a dedicated member of Calvary Baptist Church in Buckhannon, WV. Mom found great joy in sharing moments with the ones she loved, her family, and friends.  Her passion for quilting, crocheting, and needlework only grew stronger as she shared it with those around her.  Mom spent countless hours perfecting her craft, ensuring that every piece she created brought comfort and warmth. Through quilting, crocheting and needlework she discovered not just a hobby but a way to express her love. A special thanks to Mary Harper of the Upshur County Senior Center for the many years you took care of Mom.  Our appreciation and thanks are also extended to Camille, Alexia, and Emily from Amedisys for taking such great care of our mother. Friends will be received Wednesday, March 6, 2024, from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Calvary Baptist Church in Buckhannon. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM with Pastor Michael Tallman officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Buckhannon, WV.
