Obituary of William "Chess" Mearns

William “Chess” Mearns, age 77, of Buckhannon, WV, died Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at the WV Veterans Nursing Facility in Clarksburg, WV. He was born January 1, 1941 in Buckhannon, a son of the late Paul and Jean Talbott Mearns. On September 17, 1965 he married Patricia Kay Carder who survives. Also surviving is one son, Robert Glenn Mearns and wife Julie of Buckhannon; one daughter, Martha Jo Vassar and husband Shane of Buckhannon; two grandsons, Spencer Mearns and Chesley Blair Vassar both of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Violet Mearns of Buckhannon; one sister, Nancy Sandy and husband John of Buckhannon and one nephew, Jeff Sandy of Buckhannon. Mr. Mearns served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was also a 50-year member of the Franklin Lodge # 7 A.F. & A.M. and was a Scottish Rite Mason. He was a Special Agent for the FBI and a member of the Frenchton United Methodist Church. Friends will be received Sunday, December 16, 2018 from 5-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Helen R. Oates officiating. Burial will follow in the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown, WV. The Upshur County Honor Guard will be conducting Military Honors and the Franklin Lodge # 7 A.F. & A.M. will be conducting Masonic Rites at the graveside.
