Obituary of Hazel Lillian Grove

Hazel Grove, age 105, of Buckhannon, WV, died Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Crestview Manor in Jane Lew, WV. She was born January 7, 1913 in Queens, WV, a daughter of the late Wirt and Melinda Koon Thayer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Grove; two sons, Weldon and Vernon Larry Grove; twin brother, Hoy Thayer; brother, Oren Talbott and sister, Ivy Black. She is survived by one daughter, Mona Lee Stoneking of Columbus, GA; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Grove of Buckhannon; one grandson, Kenneth Stoneking of Lawrenceville, GA; three granddaughters, Susan Hull and Crystal Ward both of Columbus and Nita Grove Farrar of Buckhannon; seven great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren. Hazel loved her farm, neighbors, friends and family. She was a homemaker and an excellent cook and baker. She loved her flower gardens. She attended Fairview United Methodist Church for many years and in the early years went there by horse and buggy. In her later years, for 7 years, she attended God’s House of Deliverance with Pastor Carolyn Grove. She also attended church services in the nursing home. She loved going to church more than anything else. She sang in choir and taught Sunday School Class at Fairview Church. She loved cleaning the church. Basil Grove, her husband, was a school teacher and he walked many miles in his younger days to teach school and was a farmer. Friends will be received Friday, March 23, 2018 from 5-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 1 PM Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Jimmie Tallman officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Union Church Cemetery in Buckhannon.
