Valta Canfield Valta Canfield Valta Canfield, age 94, of Buckhannon, WV, died Saturday, July 18, 2015 at the St. Joseph Hospital NCF. She was born April 16, 1921 in Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Edgar Huff and Lela Alberta Ervin Curry. In 1944 she married LeRoy Canfield who died July 12, 1989. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Lee Canfield, one daughter-in-law, Linda Canfield and one brother Paul Curry. She is survived by three sons, Roy E. “Ed” Canfield and Fiance’ Angie Miller, Chuck and Carla Canfield both of Buckhannon and Thomas Lynn Canfield and wife Debbie of MD; one daughter, Cay Cutright and husband Mike of DE; five grandsons, C.W. Canfield and wife Sarah of TX, David Canfield and wife Susie of PA, Allen Canfield and wife Holly of Buckhannon, Joshua Canfield and wife Brandy of SC and Kurt Canfield; four granddaughters, Kimberly Fleming and husband Doug of MD, Cassie Neumann and husband Spencer of TX, Jessica Swann and husband Zach and Shauna Ushko and husband James of FL; five great granddaughters, Ashley Ushko, Sarah Canfield, Scarlett Swann, Stella Swann, and Kathryn Canfield; twelve great grandsons, James, Andrew and Ryan Fleming, Aidan, Wilson, Austin, Harrison and Evan Canfield, Noah, Nelson and Niles Neumann and Michael Ushko; Mrs. Canfield earned her undergraduate and Master’s degree in education and music from WVWC. She taught elementary school in Monongalia County and in Upshur County at Saberton, Daybrook, Teter, Upper Peck’s Run and Tennerton. She was devoted to her students and their families. One of her greatest loves was music, everything from hymns, classics, to popular songs. As a young woman, she sang in a Quartet, and at weddings and other events. Later she participated in the First United Methodist Church Choir and in several Buckhannon Community Theater musicals. There was always “music in the air” when Valta was there. Valta had many dear friends and neighbors who were close to her throughout her lifetime. She credits her long life to her family and her faithful friends. Mrs. Canfield was active in the First United Methodist Church (66 years), a member of UMW and WCTU. She was active in D.A.R., the retired Teacher’s Association and Wesleyan’s Emeritus Club. Friends will be received at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Wednesday, July 22, 2015 from 5-8 PM. A funeral service will be held 10 AM Thursday, July 23, 2015 at the funeral home with the Rev. Steven Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery. A luncheon will be served at the First United Methodist Church after the burial. All family, friends and neighbors are welcome. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com.
