Allen R. Beer, age 66, of Buckhannon, WV died Friday, February 14, 2014 at his home. He was born September 29, 1947 in Buckhannon, a son of the late Glen Dale Beer and Thelma Greathouse Beer Reeder. On October 11, 1997 he married Mildred “Millie” McGee who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Amanda Woody and husband Scott of French Creek, WV; one granddaughter, Kyrie Woody of French Creek; one grandson, Scotty Allen Woody of French Creek; three sisters, Linda Ball and husband Gene of Buckhannon, Jo Ann Mitchell of Caldwell, OH and Nancy Higgins and husband Richard of Fairmont, WV; one brother-in-law, Hugh McGee and wife Ruthie of Buckhannon and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Beer was a Juvenile Officer of the WV Supreme Court from 1975 to 1978 and then from 1979 to 2005 he was the Director of Social Services and Attendance for the Upshur Co. Board of Education. In 2004 he was the Social Services and Attendance Director of the year for WV. Allen was a member of the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church, but in recent years attended the Bethany Baptist Church in Hall, WV. He also served on the Bethany Cemetery Board of Trustees. Allen was a graduate of the Buckhannon Upshur High School in 1965, received his Undergraduate Degree in Sociology and Psychology from WVWC in 1975 and received his Graduate Degree in Counseling Psychology from WVU in 1982. He served two tours with the U.S. Army in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Mr. Beer was a past member of the Tennerton Lions Club, the Upshur Co. Family Resource Network and the Upshur Co. Senior Center Advisory Board. Allen was the past President of the Board of Directors for New Dawn Youth Center and the past President and Treasurer of the WV Association of Social Services and Attendance Personnel. He was also the past Superintendent of Mt. Hope UMC Sunday School. Friends will be received Sunday, February 16, 2014 from 3-5 and 6-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Monday at the Bethany Baptist Church in Hall, WV with the Rev. Roland M. “Bud” Brown officiating. The Upshur Co. Honor Guard will conduct full military honors at the church. A private burial will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com.
