Herbert Lee Pumphrey, Sr.
Herbert Lee Pumphrey, Sr., age 86, of Ellamore, WV died Friday, July 11, 2008 at Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, WV, under the care of hospice. He was born March 5, 1922 in Upshur County, WV, a son of the late George Thomas and Hetty Lenora Harman Pumphrey. On August 1, 1944 he married Mary Cathleen Phillips who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Herbert Lee Pumphrey, Jr., and wife Bonnie of Madison, OH and Thomas Burton Pumphrey, Sr. of Buckhannon, WV; two daughters, Connie Talbott and husband Leo of Tallmansville, WV and Linda Matthews and husband David of Winchester, VA; eleven grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold C. and Ray Marvin Pumphrey and one sister, Nina Marie Edgell. Mr. Pumphrey worked as a coal miner and in the timber industry. He also worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Pickens, WV and Montana. He served in the US Army from 1942-1946 with the 78th Calvary Recon Troop Lightening Division, in the European Theater during the Battle of the Bulge and was at the Remagen Bridge. He was an avid sportsman and loved hunting, fishing and feeding the birds. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He had a loving family and will be missed by all. Friends will be received Sunday, July 13, 2008 from 6-9 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Ron Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Union Church Cemetery at Tallmansville, WV. Buckhannon VFW Post # 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post # 7 American Legion, DAV Chapters # 5 & 36 will conduct military honors at the graveside. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com.
