Wanda Lee Hickman, 94, of Buckhannon, passed away Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, at Monongalia General Hospital with her family by her side. She was born Aug. 1, 1930, to the late Agee and Dale Bush in rural Given in Jackson County. The family moved to Dunbar when she was a teenager, where she met her future husband, Paul Hickman. Wanda graduated from Dunbar High School in 1947 at just 16 years of age. After lying about her age to gain entry in Kanawha Valley Hospital’s nursing program, she graduated in 1950 and worked as a Registered Nurse in Charleston and Columbus, Ohio, where Paul attended Ohio State University. They married in 1954, and Wanda retired from her profession to raise their family. In 1958 they moved to Buckhannon, where Paul worked as a professor at West Virginia Wesleyan College, and lived in the home they built together until Paul's death in 2013. They spent their days traveling, camping, hiking, reading, and spending time with family. She will be remembered for her kindness, intelligence, wit and integrity. Wanda is survived by her three children, Dave Hickman and wife Julie Cryser of Morgantown, John Hickman of Winter Garden, Fla., and Kathryn Hickman and husband Thomas Collins of Port Chester, N.Y. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Gary Hickman and wife Heather of Washington, Pa.; Michael Hickman and wife Crystal of Boothsville; Grace and Annie Hickman of Morgantown; Emily and Clare Collins of Port Chester, N.Y., Patrick Collins of Denver, Colo.; Leandra Clovis and husband Seth of Tampa, Fla.; Brittany Hickman of Winter Garden, Fla.; and Kasey Hickman of Tampa, Fla. She is also survived by five great grandchildren, Reese, Cameron and Madison Hickman of Washington, Pa., and Callie and Parker Clovis of Tampa, Fla. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Gene and Paul, her sister, Nancy, and her daughter-in-law Jan. At her insistence, there will be no formal service. She will be cremated, and the family will gather at a later date. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com.
