This is my second post in memory of Cindy. After high school, we weren't in touch except at Christmas. Having read her obituary, I am amazed at how involved she was in so many different activities. But I am not surprised because Cindy was very intelligent and active in many endeavors. I am saddened by her passing and send healing hugs to her family. She leaves a wonderful legacy.

Dear Cindy, my American mom.
You were my mom, all those years ago, back in 1987-88, when you and JC opened your home and heart for me, a shy teenager from Norway.
Never have I met a more warm-hearted and kind woman as you, Cindy, my American mom.
And we’ve kept in touch, all these years since I left, after spending a schoolyear in Buckhannon. You, JC, Jen and Rob came to visit Norway already in 1990, and we spent a great time together sightseeing parts of Norway. Our next face-to-face encounter was 15 years later, when my husband and I, and our two boys visited you in the US. As we landed on American soil, and the extraordinary welcome we got, made me feel like I was coming «home» to my American family. You even welcomed my husband as your son-in-law and my boys as grandchildren. That was what we felt.
In 2011 you and JC, together with Lindsay, came to Norway again and visited our home in Hamar, as well as meeting my parents in Røros, a historical site in Norway. It was so nice to welcome you to our home!
And everytime we met, I felt like it had just been some months ago since the last time. Some people has that quality. You, Cindy, had that quality.
When the news about your illness reached Hamar, you were so positive and full of hope about the treatment. Of course you were. As I remember, you were always positive, and there was nothing a good night’s sleep couldn’t take care of. But, as we all know – a good night’s sleep cannot fix absolutely everything.
I have so many great memories from 1987-88. My very first one, is the birthday cake you had made for me. How surprised I was when all those colors appeared inside the cake! And how much fun we had when carving that pumpkin for Halloween! It was all new to me. I had never seen a pumpkin in real life before. I could go on and on and on with memories of you, Cindy.
I will keep all my memories of you in my heart. You will always be my American mom, and I feel so lucky that it was you and your family who picked me to come and stay with you as an exchange student 37 years ago! You’ve been an inspiration to me, being so kind, positive and warm. I am going to miss you deeply. My condolences and warmest thoughts to JC, Jen, Rob and the rest of the family.
Rest in peace, dearest Cindy.

Cindy was a member of the Bell Choir at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. Her smile, love of playing, and concern and love for others was always who she was. Her love of life and enthusiasm in all she did was contagious to all she met. Our prayers are with all of the family as they celebrate Cindy's incredible life. She will be missed and we will always remember.

I cannot say enough about Cindy’s skills as a teacher. Most importantly, she enjoyed teaching and obviously showed Christlike love for her students. Every student deserves to have every teacher to be a “Mrs. Raffety.” She took the time to start wherever the student was as the student came into the classroom, and she taught more than just one average year of mathematics.
As an individual, she was (“is,” her spirit is still alive) a woman of integrity doing what was right even when others might disapprove.
I hope to work with her once again under God’s command.
My prayers and thoughts are with the family as adjustments are made in your earthly life. I am sure she will be assisting you when she can and joyfully greeting you in the future.

We didn’t have nearly long enough with Cindy, but the few years we did have provided us with so many precious memories of celebrations of life events, sporting events (Go, Buccs!), holiday gatherings, pool time, and “just because” time together. Truly one of God’s greatest blessings to our family, she was the second person (after her granddaughter, Mallory) to welcome us to the neighborhood, and her kindness and friendship only grew from there. It was easy to see why she was such a beloved member of any group - her family, the neighborhood, and the greater community all benefited from her wonderful spirit and presence.
Cindy’s smile, gentleness, generosity, faithfulness, love of family and friends, and humor will live in our hearts forever.
Our heartfelt sympathies and empathy for this great loss.
Love,
Michele & David (and Jo)

This woman right here is the reason why I passed my 10th grade year she went out of her way to help me with all the school work I couldn't figure out how to do. This woman is the reason why I enjoyed math class, she taught me how to do math in our own little way. You was, hands down the strongest, loving, amazing and most of all one of my favorite teachers in that school. R.I.P. You will truly be missed by so many. I hope you can rest peacefully and watch over your loved ones. Love and miss you Mrs. Raffety...

Just an amazing a nice person. I remember as a boy I didn’t have a dog and I would ask to walk her two beagles, maybe Sherlock and Watson? around the woods. I still don’t know how I didn’t lose them, but for some reason she trusted an 7,8,9,10 yr old boy to walk and return them. She always had the biggest smile. Such a kind hearted person, she ll be missed by everyone she met.

I first met her as Mrs. Raffety, my high school geometry teacher, and she impressed young me with her sensible and kind, yet firm practices. She was a great teacher. As I gained my own classroom and professionalism, I knew Cindy as a colleague and mentor. She was forever optimistic and concerned about staff and students alike. I’m grateful that I’ve been able to return the favor by having her granddaughter, Mallory in my class, and Cindy would gratefully agree that she shares much of her same humble kindness. Many blessings have been given and collected, and many more have yet to come because of Cindy Raffety.

Mrs Rafferty was the best teacher EVER. She loved everyone and was always a joy to be around. She poured her heart into each student and made sure they loved math as much as she did. Even after years of graduating, I would see her out and she would always give me a hug. I loved being in her class, she was a hoot. She made me love math and pushed me to go on further. She was one in a million and touch many lives along her journey. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.
