IB and I were friends through junior high and high school. While we thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company, we also seemed to dampen each other’s better judgements, leading to a number of mildly ill-fated incidents, no serious injuries, and only one arrest (not really an arrest, but a citation and fine for scuba diving in a heavily traveled boating lane). We’d not been in contact since his mother died, but his “larger than life” life will be with me forever. Van Nickell
