Dave was a good friend of my dad, but as a teenager, he was an idol. He had a Porshe 944, rolling party van, a BMW 2002, and high-end stereo equipment. I recall listening to U2 on his home stereo and being in awe of how good it sounded. I learned of his passing today from my dad and it struck hard. He was an incredible guy and now that I am much older, I have many of the same interests as he, such as aviation, cars, and high end sound. Thanks for turning me on to such things when I was a kid, Dave. All my best to Beth and Spencer.

Dave achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and then was proud to see Spencer also attain his Eagle Scout. They enjoyed many scouting adventures together.

Dave was a great neighbor. I could always count on him. Our house was hit by lightning, and our alarm was going off with a loud siren, really loud.
He came rushing over to make sure we were okay. I told him we were but I thought we’d been struck by lightning. As the siren blared, he smiled and said, “ya think?”.
I have many other memories of his good neighboring, always ready with a chainsaw when a limb fell, growing nice tomatoes in his back yard.
We moved away and didn’t do a good job of keeping in touch, but I was really sad to hear of his passing.

David was my longtime hangar neighbor at Chesapeake Regional Airport. He was a very pleasant person and always had a friendly greeting and story to share. Folks like David gave the airport a community atmosphere. As we said, “Some folks have a beach house, some have a home in the mountains. We have a hangar and an airplane or two.”
My condolences to David’s family and friends. We’re all going to miss him.

I send my sincere condolences to the Johnston family for your sudden loss of David! I knew Dave from working with him indirectly while employed by AT&T. We had one meeting at his house in Norfolk while he was employed by AT&T and I developed a very healthy respect for David as a person, as a skilled manager, and as multi-talented multi-skilled individual who could do most anything. He had a very positive outlook on life and as a human being he was outstanding! I lost touch with David over the years because I didn’t work directly for Dave and I’m kind of sad I didn’t keep up with him. Your entire greater family and friends are in my prayers!

David, I will always remember our school years, how you "torchured" me in Sunday school class, the time I pushed you in a baby carriage down the street in a parade and the music you and Rick played together. Those were good times. Your Mom never stopped talking about the baby carriage. I will miss you and seeing your smile. The class of '72 has lost another great man. May God bless you in heaven and always my friend!

This is such a heart breaking loss and it's hard to put thoughts to words. My memories of Dave are all incredibly good ones. He shared many of my own interests and hobbies and was always gracious and fun to be with. My most primary thought is how close and inseparable you all have always been. To live life together the way you have is such a blessing. All of us here in New England send you our heartfelt love and prayers. I know your faith and relationship with our Lord and Savior will give you strength and comfort. We hope to see you soon.
Big Love,
Sands and Kim

Snowball fights and a snowman on the 4th of July on Mount Phillips at Philmont Scout Ranch.
Quintessential Dave. A true Renaissance Man, gifted leader, and great friend.
Having survived the thunderstorm that night and not getting blown off the mountain. I always thought we would get one more chance to go back.
The clock ran out far too soon….

Dave was a special friend for several years as we shared boating trips on the Potomac river. I could always count on Dave to be my boat in guru since my voting knowledge, especially my voting repair knowledge, was very limited and Dave’s was very extensive. I remember one trip down the Potomac in particular when his boat was a distance behind mine, and one of my two engines failed. Fortunately, we were approaching the route 301 bridge on the river which had a marina or two you could dock at. So I docked and radioed, Dr. Dave and as I fully expected, he tied up next to me and went through his always present toolbox, and somehow came up with a valve that he needed to replace on my boat which saved the day and the weekend for me, as the two of us continued down the river . It was a memory of a special friend doing a special favor. I will always cherish the memories of our wonderful times together on the water, including our special Fourth of July boating, watching the fireworks on the Washington wall. Joe Greif

Joe and Aline those boating days were so special and we cherish those memories. We took Miss Conduct II down the Dismal Swamp canal across the Albemarle Sound in a lightening storm to Manteo when Spencer was still little. The return trip was thru Oregon Inlet and up the Atlantic Ocean. We had an engine problem so I navigated on one engine while he repaired the other. We were being followed by a nasty summer storm. I had no doubt he would handle it and yes he did. He's the man
