William Hartsel Smith, Jr., age 89, of Sinking Spring, PA, died Saturday, April 23, 2022, at his daughter’s home in Sinking Spring. He was born November 10, 1932, in Buckhannon, WV, a son of the late William Hartsel and Sophronia Elizabeth Phillips Smith. On July 9, 1958, he married Mary Lou Halterman who preceded him in death on January 13, 2011. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Roger William Smith and three sisters, Betty, Melba and Velma. Surviving are two daughters, Karen McDavid and husband Rick of Sinking Spring and Donna Creel and husband Ronald of Luray, VA; one son, Jerry Hartsel Smith and wife Monica of Berne, IN; three grandsons, Steven Creel of Luray, Christopher McDavid and wife Katie of Monroe, CT and Jacob Smith of Toledo, OH; five granddaughters, Tami Byron and husband John of Williamsburg, VA, Crystal Paradis and husband Ken of Mineral, VA, Jamie Blomberg and husband Mike of Shelton, CT, Nicole Creel of Mineral and Elizabeth Booth and husband Charles of Ellettsville, IN; eleven great grandsons, Gavin Byron of The U.S. Navy San Diego, CA,  Aidan Byron of Williamsburg, Michael “Ike” and Zachary Blomberg both of Shelton, Elias and Ezra Booth both of Ellettsville, Ethan McDavid of Monroe, Owen and Cole Paradis both of Mineral and Hunter and Hudson Creel both of Luray; two great granddaughters, Natalie Blomberg of Shelton and Emily McDavid of Monroe; one sister, Winona Aylestock of South Riding, VA and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Smith played football, basketball and baseball at BUHS. He was a graduate of the Class of 1950. Mr. Smith then served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956 on the USS Macon CA132 in the fire control division. Mr. Smith retired from the US Postal Service after 30 years of service. He enjoyed camping, boating, water skiing and loved dogs. Mr. Smith was an avid WV mountaineer fan but most of all he loved God, his Christian Faith and his family.  Friends will be received Sunday, May 1, 2022, from 10 to 11 AM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Sunday at the funeral home with Pastor Gary Evans officiating. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made in contributions to Victory Baptist Church in Reading, PA. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com.
