Leon was lunch companion and friend to my parents, John and Barbara Porterfield, at Maplewood Independent Living. My father passed away in February, and Leon provided Mom with a sense of constancy by lunching with her every day afterward ... until .... When the pandemic isolated the Maplewood residents to their individual apartments, Leon called Mom daily to check on her.
My husband, Jim, and I lunched at Maplewood pretty regularly, and we enjoyed sitting at table with Leon. I loved hearing his stories (he was a wonderful storyteller!) and we had fun swapping comments about the food. Jim is a retired x-ray tech, and he and Leon enjoyed comparing tales of their hospital experiences.
Shortly after Leon and I met, he proudly told me, "I can always remember your last name because I had a schoolteacher named Mrs. Snodgrass." I replied, "That’s a great way to remember. Just one thing - my name isn’t Snodgrass." We both laughed, and it was a joke between us ever after,

Thankful that I could participate in Dr. Linger’s funeral service through the magic of technology. I remember sitting near his desk when he order his Texas Instrument calculator. He was fascinated. I only have fond memories of him.

Uncle Leon was my great uncle. His late wife, Melba, was my late grandmother‘s twin sister. Whenever my family would visit our seasonal cabin in West Virginia, which happened to be right across from Uncle Leon’s cabin, he was always there, checking up on us and making sure everything was going ok. He carved out walking sticks for my sister, brother and
me so that whenever we would visit, we’d have those sticks to help us up the hills in the mountains. His was so full of life and loving. I will miss him.

I am praying for you and sorry for your loss. Aletta and Bob, Gary and Brenda, Tim and Kathy, Dr. Leon Linger and Melba represented so much Christian love to my family. My fathers boss and life long friend. Dr. Leon put me under anesthesia at age 7 for a tonsillectomy, and at age 17 for an emergency appendectomy. I read his poetry often and know I am blessed to have been in your family’s friendship my entire life. Numbers 6: 24-26

Leon was a wonderful brother! He was two years older than I and when we were young he always looked after me. We went to W.Va. Wesleyan College together. As adults we didn't see each other much since I live in Ohio.
I was happy for him when he died since he said he was ready to go right away. He is now in heaven with Jesus, and wife Melba. I will miss him very much
His family is in my prayers,
Leoma Linger Straight

Leoma, I was honored to know your brother, and am indebted to him for his support when my father died. I was especially close to your parents - Ross and Ruby. I will be watching the service online at 1:00 today. Blessings on you and the entire Linger family, as you grieve the loss of your dear brother. I have his book of poetry. Thank you for everything you did for UMW at First UMC here in Buckhannon.

Aletta and family. I am so sad to hear of Dr. Linger’s passing. He hired me almost fresh out of Anesthesia Training. I only have fond memories of him. His life as a Christian man was the moral compass he followed. I offer all of you strength, peace and courage as you walk the road of grief. Kaye Swiger.
