Having been away from West Virginia for 20+ years, I've only just learned of Jim's passing. My deepest sympathies to Jim's whole family and legions of friends. Jim and I formed a fast friendship over 15 years of covering sports and photographing games for "competing" newspapers, but we never considered ourselves rivals. I always looked forward to knowing I could hang out with Jim, cameras in hand, and he always seemed genuinely pleased to see me. It was Jim who brought me to the Record Delta to edit the news in the mid-90s. Jim made me a better and more meticulous editor, helping me to hone a skill that served me well when I decided to leave the Mountain State for a sports editor position in Texas.I'll never forget Jim's friendship, warmth, kindness and dedication to the young people of Upshur County and beyond. He was one of a kind.

I am so sorry for your loss. I never met a nicer and friendlier gentleman than Jim. He was so very proud of his children. His knowledge of baseball was incredible. I would pick his brain on baseball which helped me to be a better Babe Ruth coach. He told me to play small ball and bunt and steal like crazy. I took his advice and the kids learned a lot and had fun. His coverage of my daughter Lisa's sports at BU and Wesleyan was so much more detailed and accurate than that of other sport writers. I noticed the same type of detailed and accurate coverage of other sports from Little League to college basketball for males and females by Jim. His articles were also very positive. He had to be one of the greatest small town sports writers in the country. Jim often asked me how Lisa was doing after she graduated Wesleyan. He took a personal interest in the kids he covered. There will never be another Jim Warner covering sports in Upshur County. He was legendary. Prayers go out for Jim's family.

Our deepest condolences to the Warner family. I know Jimmy and Frank Feola were close and talked a lot about B-U athletics and they said some nice things about my athletic career. People like F. Feola and Jimmy Warner are hard to replace.

Dear Warner family. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of "Mr. Warner". He told me on numerous occasions over the years to call him Jim. I had so much respect for Mr. Warner as a man and dear friend that I could never do that. To me he was dear Mr. Warner. As I sit here today, tears run down my face as I reflect on what he meant to me. I respected his opinion, not only on sports but for life in general. He taught me what work ethic is and that giving anything less than 150% is not acceptable.
He treated all level of sports with the same respect and importance. From Little League all the way through the College level. I enjoyed playing baseball for him in Legion baseball. I never played for anyone that I respected more.
My prayers are with your family. I will miss "Mr. Warner", but look forward to the day that we can talk sports again in Heaven.
May God give you comfort and peace.
God bless
Mike Hinkle and family
