Larry Wayne Mackey, age 73, of Buckhannon, WV, died Monday, January 6, 2020, at his home. He was born December 29, 1946, in Buckhannon, a son of the late Junior O. and Elnora J. Royer Mackey. He is survived by one daughter, Traci Payne and husband Todd of Buckhannon; two grandsons, Cole and Cameron Payne both of Buckhannon; two brothers, Jim Mackey and wife Rosemary of Buckhannon and David Mackey of Parkersburg, WV; two sisters, Linda Koon of NC and Elsie Daft and husband Terry of Buckhannon; former wife, Peggy Kittleson of Buckhannon; several nieces and nephews and companion, Carol Heatherly of Buckhannon. Larry was a former Fire Chief of the Buckhannon Fire Department where he began serving in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and received many medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Vietnamese Medal of Honor. Larry was an avid outdoorsman that loved hunting, fishing, boating, camping and water skiing. He was a member of the Buckhannon Moose Lodge #598 and Jaycees. He spent much of his time giving back to his community. Friends will be received Thursday, January 9, 2020, from 4 PM to 8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. J. Edward McDaniels officiating. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. The Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the gravesite. The Buckhannon Fire Department will provide Firefighter Ceremonial Events during the procession. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his honor to the Buckhannon Fire Department at 22 South Florida Street, Buckhannon, WV 26201.
