I wanted to send my sincere condolences to the Hymes Family.
Matt was one of the most self-less people I have ever known, and it was a privilege to know him. He shaped my life tremendously as a tennis player growing up in Buckhannon. He and I spent NUMEROUS hours on the tennis courts at WVWC.
Lots of "lessons" ended with a trip to Dairy Queen downtown. I will also never forget Matt's continued kindness over the years that followed.
I will miss Matt greatly, and will be forever grateful for his thoughtfulness, kindness, and skill.

My condolences to the Hymes family at the loss of Matt. While living in Buckhannon I spent many wonderful hours playing chess with Matt (he won about 75% of the games with his meticulous play), as well as hours on the basketball court, the tennis court, and the badminton court. Matt and I had a common interest in literature and poetry and we especially enjoyed studying and discussing poems. Matt was a very learned person, in many subjects, and my friendship with him has been one of the most valued experiences of my life. I shall miss him.

So sorry to learn of Matt’s accident. What a gentle soul. I know of no other person who tried harder to please others. A good example in our present social climate.

I was shocked to hear of Matt's passing. He and I were co-captains of the BUHS 1954-55 basketball team. I always remember him as being kind to others and smiling every time we said "hello" (even as teenagers!) I enjoyed talking with him at the last gathering of our BUHS 1955 class. He filled me in with his activities at Wesleyan and at his law practice. It was clear he was enjoying life, and had been for lots of years. Matt will be missed in a big way.

Larry and Shirley and families,
I was so saddened to hear of Matt's death. What a horrible shock for you and all of us. I have so many fond memories of growing up with the Hymes family. And, of course, the BUHS band. Hearing Alec and Matt play their saxophones and clarinets was a joy. Please accept my sincere condolences.

I remember Matt - he was not quick to pass judgement on people an admirable personal trait we could all learn from his example...
God Bless him !

Matt provided many Friday afternoon topics for discussion with Randy Levine and I at City Hall. His attention to detail in City legal matters found a fact that made all of us consider the real issues. A great individual.

Matt was a dear family friend that would spend various holidays with my family and a great friend of my dad’s. He always brought a smile to our faces and had some of the best stories. He was a gift to the community and gave back in every way possible. I will always miss Matt and send nothing but love to his friend & family.

Matt was one of the most selfless and patient persons I have ever known.. He was never in a hurry to answer a legal question or to give a pointer on the tennis court.. he was well known at the courthouse for keeping the candy dish filled. Known for always putting the needs of other ahead of his own.. A greeting with a smile and a positive attitude were his trademarks.. I was fortunate to know his as a good friend and tennis partner over many years. He will be missed.

I have many good memories of Matt over the years because we grew up in the same neighborhood, walked the same street to school and were frequently part of the same group attending community functions. I knew him as a kind and thoughtful friend. He had a ready smile and genuinely cared about others. My sincere condolences to all the family.

There are not enough words to describe the kindness Matt always showed everyone. I grew up 2 houses down from him and what an amazing guy he was. He always bought everything I sold from Girl Scout Nuts and Cookies to any sort of fundraiser I did for school. Ever since I was a little girl until I graduated from college, I received $20 in the mail every single Christmas. My family and I always brought him food on Christmas Eve and baked him cookies and treats! He was going to get an invitation to my wedding. My heart breaks for his family and friends who will miss him. His family will be kept in my prayers over the next couple of months. One of the most genuine people I have ever met!! His presence will certainly be missed!!

I shall always remember "Mr. Hymes" as a kind and gracious gentleman who was an elementary school band teacher many years ago in Barbour County. He never forgot his young students, always speaking to me with a warm and friendly smile and calling me by name.
My heartfelt sympathy is extended to his family and friends.
