Obituary of Roy Elton Pettit II
Roy Elton Pettit, II, age 72, of Buckhannon, WV, died Friday, December 21, 2018 at his home. He was born September 16, 1946, in Lockport, NY, a son of the late Norman Rood Pettit and Anne Seekins Pettit Mayor. On July 8, 1974, he married Donna Wamsley Pettit who survives. Also surviving is one son, Roy Elton “Chip” Pettit III and wife Kayt of Taylor County, WV; two daughters, Jennifer Nichols of Los Gatos, CA and Emily Pettit of Buckhannon; three granddaughters, Caitlyn Colbert of Lakeland, FL, Kelly Humble of Los Gatos and Maddy Earnest of Buckhannon; one sister, Joan Saulnier of NH and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Pettit voluntarily served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam. He was a member of the Elks Lodge # 1736 in Buckhannon. Mr. Pettit graduated from WVWC in 1972 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. He was a Teacher and Principal at Tallmansville Elementary School from 1972 to 1975. Mr. Pettit received his Master’s Degree in Education from WVWC in 1986 and did further graduate work at WVU. He worked briefly for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and then for Badger Coal Company. Mr. Pettit was a KEEPS Teacher at Buckhannon Upshur Middle and High School. Then he became Assistant Principal at BUHS and then at BUMS. Mr. Pettit was the Principal at Hodgesville Elementary School, Union Elementary School and Assistant Superintendent of Upshur County Schools. He loved photography, the outdoors, music, sports, woodworking, sitting on his screened in porch smoking a pipe and feeding the birds and spoiling his dog, Abby. Friends will be received Wednesday, December 26, 2018, from 5 to 9 PM at the Christian Fellowship Church. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Thursday at the church with the Rev. J. Edward McDaniels officiating. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. The Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the graveside.
