My family moved to Buckhannon in 1969. I attended West Virginia Wesleyan College, earning a BME and a MAT degree. Two musicians I played with were Jack Carpenter and Butch Nixon. They wanted to play for the Buckanaires and wanted me to play as well. Thus began a whole new direction in my life.
I have several great memories, including the European tour. My favorite though was performing MacArthur Park. Mr. Knorr sang the lead with my band, Cold Wind accompanying the 120 voice choir. It was like grabbing a bare electric wire ! I miss him, but thank God for our paths crossing.

Beyond all of the many contributions Jim made to this community in his adult years, I will always remember Jim for his teaching. Although only a young adult in junior high, he was able to command my attention to actually listen to classical music. He allowed me to develop an appreciation of the composer's vision captured in the music through Jim's words. His passion for music was as contagious as his personality in a room. He has been and will be missed.

Jim was my vocal student at West Virginia Wesleyan College in the early 1960's. One of my favorite memories of Jim was when he came before faculty to be evaluated (juried). Juries for music students were attended by all music faculty. Each student appeared and were judged by each faculty member. When Jim appeared for his jury (for which each student received a grade), everything went well until he was asked, like all vocal students, to sing certain scales. Jim positioned himself in the proper position and began to sing his scale. Unlike all of the other students who sang, Jim sang his one octave major scale, and then he began to continue upward until he had sung about a three octave scale up and beyond the highest falsetto in a man's voice. When he had finished, he grinned and looked first at me and then at Dr. Agey, Chairman of our Music Department. I had to smile at what Jim had just done, then Dr. Agey let out his characteristic little high pitched giggle and said, "Well, I don't think I've ever heard anyone do that...especially a baritone. Each faculty member agreed." Jim was truly a wonderful vocalist.

They speak of the love and respect from all of us who owe him so much for his belief in us and bringing out the best in us. He called me his late bloomer as it took my senior year to really sing out in class. Made it to all state! Thank you, Mr Knorr! May you rest now and don't be too hard on the angels as they sing! More than any other person, Mr. Knorr represented the best of Buckhannon. He showed that you can live in a small place and still have a large impact on many other lives. He brought everyone together with his boundless energy, optimism, talents, and teaching skills. I first met him in second semester 7th grade music (1964), where he seemed almost exotic, from somewhere else, younger and "cooler" than any other teacher I had, but still very much in charge. I know now that I have zero musical ability, but my brothers, sisters, and mother were in Mr. Knorr's choirs and theatrical productions, so that "Mr. Knorr" was a household word for many years. He had the ability to bring out the best in people without making them feel lacking. And, he always remembered my name.
While waiting for his obituary, I was curious where Mr. Knorr was from, so I looked on Ancestry.com. He was from "all over" which likely encouraged his ability to relate to everyone. And, I learned that Mr. Knorr was a direct descendant of Charles Willson Peale, the early American painter, soldier, scientist, inventor, politician and naturalist.

As we grow older, most of our memories are eroded and many are disseminated into oblivion like a puff of smoke on a windy day. There are a few...just a few... memories, however, that stick with us to the end; embedded in our hearts and branded on our minds.
Every time I substitute teach at BUMS (BUHS my first three years of high school), the spirit of Mr. Knorr seems to always embrace me when walking down that hallway behind the kitchen; passing the music room which was once his domain. As if it were yesterday, that 40+ year memory of the first time I met Mr. Knorr floods back to my mind... EACH and EVERY time I travel that hallway. On that auld lang syne day, midway through my sophomore year, walking that hall on my way to class, I had been singing a tune to myself when a teacher's voice emanated behind me, "Hey you! What's your name?" I thought I was in trouble (usually was) and reluctantly turned and answered "David Wilson, sir". (We called teachers "sir" and "m'am" back then...courtesy lacking in school today) He looked up at me, into my eyes, with that one-eyebrow-raised, serious face that only belonged to him and said "Not bad singing there...ever think about joining the choir?" . Relieved I was innocent of any wrong doing and taken off guard with the question he presented, I just stammered my response, "Not really...not that good at it". He replied with his his trademarked grin, "Well I think you are. Come talk to me sometime. I'm Mr. Knorr". (see what I mean by branded...I can't remember what I had for breakfast, yet this conversation is verbatim!) I mumbled some reply I would, then hurried on to class. I had NO intention of joining choir! However, over the next two weeks, somehow (God only knows) our paths kept crossing and every time he would call me by name and ask me about joining choir. I finally told him I couldn't fit it in, even though I had a study hall the next semester, but wrong hour for choir. Couple days later he showed me my schedule changed so I could start choir the second half of school; all I needed was my parents signature. Just had to get parents to say no, then this man would quit hounding me! My mom "turned-against-me" and signed the paper; which is how I joined choir and became involved in the BEST part of my high school experience. He talked me into the show choir my senior year and shanghai'd me into theater my junior. I continued theater as an avocation after BUHS and BCT; moving to the D.C. area and working several years with The Greenbelt Arts Center and Prince George's Playhouse. At some point, he even pulled me into the FUMC choir. I swear, the man could've sold Christmas cards to Ebenezer Scrooge...BEFORE the infamous ghostly visits.
I am proud and honored to have known and worked with this man! My life was better for him being a part of it. I was a loner and an introvert and he taught me to open up and embrace life. I learned how to comfortably get in front of crowds and sing or talk without inhibitions. I learned to work with others and that our efforts could produce a "magic" that could bring joy to many. I learned not to hide talents under a basket. I learned most of all to find my "corner of the sky" and embrace it! God bless and watch over his family in this time of loss.
So don't ask where I'm going
Just listen when I'm gone
And far away you'll hear me singing
Softly to the dawn.......

Dear Judy & Family,
I’ve tried for days to come up with special words for this very special man, but I find there are not enough words in the English vocabulary to describe what Jim Knorr meant to me, as well as to so many countless other people who crossed paths with him. My first remembrance was in grade school when he brought Iggy and put on a show for us – what an inspiration! Throughout both junior and senior high, Mr. Knorr was an inspiration. He always wanted everyone to have a chance. He never pre-judged a person. He always tried to find a compliment. He wanted, expected and elicited perfection (or as close as a human can get) from every task.
One year I returned to Buckhannon for a high school reunion. My family moved the summer before my senior year, but I always counted myself as an alumnus of BUHS. I called Mr. Knorr on that occasion to tell him how important he had been in my life, how his encouragement and faith in me had bolstered me through some very grim moments. My parents were both teachers and I know they rarely heard how important their influence was on students’ lives. I wanted him to know he was important to me.
I’m certain there are generations of people who encountered Mr. Knorr on various levels who feel the same way. He was too humble to understand all the ways his words, actions and dedication molded the world around him and into the worlds of those he touched.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share his celebration with us and allow us to tell you how grateful we are for all the sacrifices you must have made to share this incredible person with us.
It is with heart-felt condolences I impart these words. Please know that all of us rejoice at having known Jim Knorr, and at the same time, all of us grieve the loss with you.
All My Love,
Lynne

Jim exuded a transcendent personality with the power and inclination, guided by his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, to change the mood of any gathering or individual. His deeply diverse and dynamic talents in the performing arts and inherent qualities of compassion, charity, and equality enabled him to do much good in the world and to touch the hearts of many, inspiring and shepherding them to be the torch-bearers of tomorrow.
Jim’s accomplishments exemplified his belief in an active faith and that music and other forms of public presentation are both life skills and in and of themselves imbue individuals with intangible abilities that serve them throughout life in any situation or capacity in which they find themselves.
He held a sincere conviction for the purity, rightness, and importance of music and music education in the lives of each individual and in society, as a whole, and sought to instil those beliefs in others. Through musical education and community engagement, Jim was able to bring music to those for whom music would never have been a consideration or a part of their lives. Students have described one of Jim’s greatest talents as encouraging them to realize their full potential, filling them with confidence and pride. In this way, he was a transcendent and dynamic music evangelist. He also brought an educational depth that challenged students and others to, as John Wesley said, “go on to perfection.”
A former Golden Gloves boxing champion, Jim also strongly believed in the goodness of wholesome sport as a form of healthy competition and as a beginning of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle throughout one’s life. He always encouraged students to be active and led by example.

We have so many fond memories of Jim. There were days when all four of us would chance to meet while walking the River Walk and exchange greetings. Sarah Jane renewed her friendship with Judy and Jim lately and enjoyed recent visits with them both. These pleasant memories will help bridge the transition as we all learn to rely on memories to see us through the coming days without Jim in our physical presence. So sorry to hear of Mr. Knorr's passing. High School Choir was the best part of those 4 years in Tennerton: the bus trips, the Christmas Concerts on TV at the bank, the plays, the night rehearsals and the excellent music. I will never forget the chalk whizzing by my head when I talked too much, which was everyday. Making the albums at the chapel, singing at Christmas by candlelight while we stood around the Chapel at Wesleyan. It all was tremendous. I am sure Mr. Knorr is leading the Heavenly Choir as we speak, and it has never sounded better. God bless the family with God's Peace, and I was fortunate to have known him. It was all excellent.
