Calvin Miles Shreve

Calvin Miles Shreve, a resident of Bridgeport Health Care Center in Bridgeport, WV died on September 9, 2018.  He was born July 6, 1924 in Upshur County, WV, the son of the late Enoch Newton and Edna Mae Miles Shreve.   On May 3, 1947 he married Mary Avis Teter who preceded him in death on October 31, 2007.  He was preceded in death by three brothers, Enoch N. Shreve, Jr., Eugene P. Shreve, and Dixie Lee Shreve, and one son Brian N. Shreve.   He is survived by two sons, Alan L. Shreve and wife Connie of Buckhannon, WV and Dennis M. Shreve and wife Kenette of Clarksburg, WV. He is also survived by five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School in 1942 and attended West Virginia Wesleyan College where he studied accounting prior to being drafted into the U.S. Army and received additional training in the U.S. Army Finance School.  Mr. Shreve served his country during WWII as Technician Third Class in the Allied Forces Headquarters Mediterranean Theater. He retired from The Central National Bank of Key Centurion which is now Chase Bank in Buckhannon after forty-four years of service, starting as a Teller and achieving the position of Cashier and Assistant Vice President and member of the Board of Directors. In 1948 Mr. Shreve enlisted in the National Guard where he served as Company Clerk and First Sergeant to a heavy tank company.    Since 1966 he has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Buckhannon having served as President and in various other capacities including long time Sergeant at Arms.  He was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow for his contributions to The Rotary Foundation.   He also previously served as Rotary District 7530 Treasurer and Secretary. During his youth Mr. Shreve was an active member of Mt. Rupert (United) Methodist Church.  After his marriage Mr. Shreve became a member of Reger Chapel (United) Methodist Church on the Brushy Fork Road.  He served the church in many capacities including Sunday school teacher, Treasurer and Superintendent, and was active and faithfully attended the church until health issues forced him to move to Bridgeport.    He also served on several committees of the West Virginia United Methodist Conference. During his lifetime Mr. Shreve was at various times active in Boy Scouts of America, Upshur County Farm Bureau, Brushy Fork Water Association, Parrish House, West Virginia Wesleyan Emeritus Club and American Legion Post 7.  In 1989 Calvin received his University of Hard Knocks degree from Alderson-Broaddus College. After his retirement Calvin spent his time pursuing his various hobbies and activities including gardening, Christmas light decorations, traveling throughout West Virginia and eating at various restaurants.  He attended many Veterans= activities, proudly wearing his uniform from World War II.  Mr. Shreve was a faithful servant of God, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and a quiet leader of his community.      In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Reger Chapel Church Cemetery, c/o Connie Shreve, Treasurer, 2639 Brushy Fork Road, Buckhannon, WV  26201, or The Rotary Foundation, 14280 Collections Center Drive, Chicago, IL  60693.  The family wishes to express its appreciation to the staff at Bridgeport Health Care Center for the excellent care and kindness shown to Calvin during his stay in their facility. Friends and family will be received at Poling St. Clair Funeral Home, 95 S. Kanawha Street, Buckhannon, WV   26201 on Thursday, September 13, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.   Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the Reger Chapel Cemetery in Buckhannon. The Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the graveside.  Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com where the service will be streamed.  Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
