Obituary of Myron B. Hymes

Dr. Myron B. Hymes, Jr. Dr. Myron B. Hymes, Jr., age 90 of Buckhannon, WV died Saturday, August 27, 2016 peacefully at his home with his family. He was born June 1, 1926 in Buckhannon, a son of the late Myron Bernard and Cecile West Hymes. Myron (“Myke”) graduated from BUHS, served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, and attended West Virginia Wesleyan College after the end of the war. He received his DDS degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery of the University of MD in 1951. On August 21, 1949 he married Elinor Imogene Randolph of Lost Creek, WV, who preceded him in death on April 24, 2005. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Hymes and two brothers-in-law, Cliff Perkins and Russell Marshall. Dr. Hymes is survived by one daughter, Beth Johnston and husband Dave of Virginia Beach, VA; two sons, Nicholas Hymes and wife Kathleen of Austin, TX and Mark Hymes of Clarksburg, MD; two grandsons, Spencer Johnston and wife Jesselyn of Virginia Beach, VA, and Connor Hymes of Clarksburg MD, ; three granddaughters, Sarah and Laura Hymes both of Austin, TX and Kendall Hymes of New York, NY; two sisters, Marguerite Perkins of Sedona, AZ and Carol Ann Marshall of Virginia Beach and one sister-in-law, Alda Hymes of Findlay, OH. Dr. Hymes was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Buckhannon and served as treasurer and member of the board of trustees and a member of the WVWC Emeritus Club. Myke served two terms on the Buckhannon City Council. He was the past President of the Buckhannon Lions Club, the Buckhannon Chamber of Commerce, the Monongahela Valley Dental Society, a life member of the American Dental Society, and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. He was also past President of the Mountaineer Woodturners. He was the past Exalted Ruler of the Order of the Elks Lodge #1736, and a Certified Master Gardener by WVU. Dr. Hymes was also a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Shriners, the Organizer and Director of Buckhannon Jaycees and the Organizer and 1st Cubmaster of Troop 127. Myke and longtime friend Dr. Robert Chamberlain delivered “Meals on Wheels” in Upshur County together until late in 2015. Besides his family and service to his community, Dr. Hymes enjoyed snow skiing for more than 50 years, playing competitive duplicate bridge with his old partner Paul Dean, hunting and fishing in WV and travelling to the ‘Sun and Surf” every summer with his family - Nags Head, NC, Virginia Beach, VA and Myrtle Beach, SC were his three favorites. There will be a Celebration of his Life on Saturday, September 24th at 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church located at 52 S. Florida Street, Buckhannon, WV, with the Reverend Steven Meadows officiating. The family has suggested that those who wish to give Memorial gifts might consider the Myron B. and Cecile Hymes Scholarship Fund at West Virginia Wesleyan College and the First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon.
