Berlin “BE” Hewitt, age 96, of Buckhannon, WV died Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Serenity Care Home in Buckhannon. He was born July 7, 1920 in Bower, WV, a son of the late Alvie Samuel and Zura Mae Stout Hewitt. On January 21, 1942 he married Ellen Lenora Bunner who preceded him in death on August 21, 1984. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandra Kay Hardman and one son, Gary Hewitt. He is survived by one daughter, Juanita Smith and husband Michael of Buckhannon; two sons, Larry Hewitt and wife Patty and John Hewitt and wife Bertha all of Buckhannon; one daughter in law, Dwanda Hewitt of Buckhannon; one son in law, Bryan “Mickey” Hardman of Horner, WV; twelve grandchildren; nine-teen great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Berlin was involved for many years in community service activities. He was one of the first to help establish the Emergency Squad in Buckhannon. For many years was he President of Upshur County REACT. He was a Tipple Operator for Upshur Coals and Financial Secretary for the UMWA local 8106. Berlin was an avid CBer and Ham operator for many years where he was known as “Mop Top”. He worked for the CCC Camp Roy Rodgers. He served his country in WWII with the US Army Air Corps, he was life-time member of the VFW and former member of the I.O.O.F. and Buckhannon Moose Lodge Lodge # 598. Friends will be received Friday, September 23, 2016 from 6-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Jerry Murrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Tallmansville, WV. The Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the graveside. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com.
