Sylvia Jean Shomo, 74, passed away at her home in Brentwood, TN on September 29th, 2016 after a brief bout with brain cancer. She was born on April 8, 1942 in Buckhannon, WV; the daughter of Clifford and Eva Fallen. Devoted wife and mother, she is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, John Shomo; two children, Renee (Chuck) Baca and Michael (Angi) Shomo; six grandchildren, Corey Baca, Hannah Shomo Sandoval, Matthew Baca, Shelby Shomo, Kaileigh Baca, and Lauren Shomo; five siblings Dorothy (Louie)Hoover, Evelyn (Mike) Coe, Rosalee (Glen) Browning, Ronald (Mary) Fallen, and CarolAnn (Steve) Kingsbury; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two siblings: Billy Fallen and Bobbie Fallen. She loved being with her “great big wonderful extended family” and took on a matriarchal role that was instrumental in bringing everyone from multiple states, together during holidays and other festive occasions. Whether you were friend or family, Sylvia made you feel welcomed and much loved; and she was much loved by others in return. During her life Sylvia thrived on staying active whether it be at work, doing service, or at play. As a young adult she worked various jobs from selling the Grit newspaper, to being a telephone operator, and occasionally doing modeling for local merchants. She was a member of the United Methodist Church for 62 years, and enjoyed singing in choir, assisting with Sunday School, and working with Meals-on-Wheels. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at Williamson County Hospital in the 1980s, and supported neighborhood-watch safety efforts. She played several sports during her mid-life, including tennis, softball, golf, and running in 5K races, often for charity or fund raising events. When asked what she did for a living, she titled herself a ‘domestic engineer which allowed her to be a wonderful homemaker for her family and to spend valuable time participating in community. Sylvia’s life will be celebrated during visitation held on Sunday, October 2, 2016 from 2-6 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home, Buckhannon, WV with funeral services conducted at Chapel Hill UMC on Monday, October 3, 2016 at 10 AM with the Rev.
