Obituary of Clarence Robert Shingleton

Clarence Robert Shingleton, age 91, of Buckhannon, WV died Saturday, March 11, 2017, at his home. He was born March 13, 1925, in Clarksburg, WV, a son of the late Clarence Otha and Violet Virginia Williams Shingleton. On November 25, 1944, he married Pearl Mae Adkins who preceded him in death on December 11, 2014. Surviving are three daughters, Elaine Mravetz and husband Robert of Sharon Center, OH, Marlene Jackson and husband Sid of Bridgeport, WV and Denise Deegan and husband Joe of Charleston, WV; one son, Bruce Shingleton and wife Rebecca of York, PA; one adopted daughter, Megan Shingleton of Buckhannon; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; two brothers, Damon Shingleton and wife Ann and Richard Shingleton and wife Alice all of FL and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his beloved wife of 70 years, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jim Shingleton; four sisters, Mary Francis, June Dodson, Adeline Horneff and Jean Egan; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elmo and Elsie Adkins and one brother-in-law, Elmo Adkins, Jr. Mr. Shingleton served in the U. S. Army during WWII in the Pacific Campaign as an Electronics/Radar Specialist, where he made Staff Sgt. by the end of the war. During WWII he was a member of the 39th Bomb Group, the 314th Bomb Wing and the 20th Air Force. He also served in the Korean War in Europe and the U.S. with the 354th Engineers and the 406th Engineer Brigade. By 1954, Mr. Shingleton made Captain and still served in active duty and the reserves until he was honorably discharged in November 1962. He was also a former Scoutmaster BSA Troop 128 in Westport, CT. Mr. Shingleton worked for Union Carbide in different managerial positions for 35 years. He worked as a Computing and Telecommunications Services Consultant, a Corporate Purchasing Agent, Assistant Plant Manager, Staff Engineer and he was the Project Engineer for the graphite cloth development for the early space program. Friends will be received Saturday, March 18, 2017, from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 1 PM at the funeral home with Pastor Jerry Murrell officiating. Entombment will follow in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Quiet Dell, WV. The Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors and the Herman Lodge #6 A.F. & A.M. will conduct masonic rites. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children 3229 Burnet Ave. Cincinnati, OH 45229-3095,www.shirnershospitalcincinnati.org or to WV Hospice 8 Hartman Plaza Buckhannon, WV 26201.
