Obituary of Carrie Ellen Samples

Carrie Ellen Tenney Samples, age 94, of Buckhannon, WV, passed away on January 10, 2018 at Holbrook on the Hill. Ellen was born in Hemlock, WV to Sterling and Alice Tenney on April 14, 1923. She married Jay A. Samples on November 10, 1946. She spent much of her time caring for her disabled daughter, LeVonda. She and her husband, Jay, worked tirelessly to get the first group home built in Upshur County. She loved flowers, cats and collecting recipes. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Sterling and Alice Tenney, husband Jay, her son Ernest, sisters Lou Scott, Annie Currence and Mary Tenney, as well as great-granddaughter, Kasey Gillum and daughters-in-law Debbie Reed and Tammy Renee Jones Samples. Ellen is survived by sons, Kenneth (Hester) of Marlinton, Jim (Joann) of French Creek, Tammy (Bernard) Vangilder (widow of son, Ernest) of Alexander, Bryan (Theresa) of Buckhannon; two daughters, LeVera Gillum (Keith) and LeVonda Samples all of Buckhannon; one daughter-in-law Loretta Samples and one sister, Martha Cochran of Lorentz. She is survived by the following grandchildren – Becky (Jim) Harlan, Ronnie (Jan) Samples, Sandra (Jeff) Marfield, Barbara (Jamie) Bailey, Kenneth (Roberta) Samples, Tammy Jo Samples, Jimbo (Lisa) Samples, Lisa (Todd) Cutlip, Lena Samples, Ernest (Liza) Samples, Jenny Samples, Ryan (Melanie) Gillum, Pamela (Joe) Maxwell, BJ Samples, Kayla (Josh) Hull, Summer (Caleb) Hiltner, Sharon (Johnny) Moore, and Nancy, Mike, and Bill Jordan. She is survived by the following great-grandchildren – Jared, Jacob, Jordan and Bethany Harlan; Zachary Samples; Corey and Colby Boyles; Tyler, Jason, and Brandon Marfield; Logan and Meghan Bailey; Hunter and Trapper Samples; Kirstie and Toddy Cutlip; Katie Samples; Cassius Samples; Jazmin, Adaryus, Jordan, Channing, and Kiya Gillum; Kyanna and Alissa Depoy; Ashton, Brooklyn, and Kenna Maxwell; Joshua, Peyton and Emily Hull; David (Ashley) Moore and Josh (Summer) Moore. Lastly, she is survived by one great-great-grandchild Lucy Mae Moore. The family would like to thank the staff at Holbrook on the Hill, Reverend Junior Harris and Reverend Buck Smith for their care and kindness over the last eight years. Friends will be received Friday, January 12, 2018 from 5 to 9 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. The funeral service will be 12 noon on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the funeral home with the Rev. Junior Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the Heaston Ridge Church Cemetery in Heaston Ridge, WV. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com.
