Matthew Ian McCoy, 19, left this world on June 15, 2017 to begin his next adventure. He is survived by his loving family, parents, Kelly and Aaron Poirier, and Tim and Suzie McCoy; two brothers, Michael McCoy and Duncan McCoy; his grandparents, Dale and Karen Woody; three aunts, Lisa Bennett and husband, Jeff, Becky McCoy and husband, Roger Young, and Heather Parke; one very special great aunt, Gwynn Woods; one uncle, John McCoy and wife, Anne; his cousins, Jacob Miller, Gabriella Parke, Taylor Ann Parke, Jay McCoy, and Emma McCoy and his two very good friends who were with him on the adventure of his lifetime, Elijah Cerchiai and Servando Arredondo. In addition, are many, many dear “best” friends that are mourning his pure soul and giving heart. He was preceded in death by his devoted grandparents, Jack and Carolyn McCoy. Matt was a gifted student. In fifth grade, he won the Lamp of Knowledge award at Buckhannon Academy Elementary School. Matthew graduated from BUHS in 2016 4th in his class. He earned the Promise Scholarship as well as a Presidential Scholarship at WVU. Matt was majoring in Philosophy and planned to become an attorney. In his freshman year At WVU, he had a cumulative GPA of 3.75. In this past spring semester, he earned a 4.0. Matthew was also a talented athlete. While in elementary school, he won the Presidential Physical Fitness Award. He was 1st team all-state soccer his senior year. He also won numerous soccer team awards. Most recently, he had earned his yellow belt in Hapkido, a self-defense martial art. Matthew was involved in many activities at BUHS, he was a member of the National Honor Society, the BU Marching Band, and the BU Soccer Team. Matt was well liked and received recognition for his peers when he was voted freshman homecoming attendant and prom king. A handsome boy, he was also voted best legs in his senior class. Matthew was a bright light in this flawed world. He didn’t know a stranger or have an enemy. He had a generous heart and lived every moment to the fullest of his short but very blessed life. Matt accomplished many great things in his life and always told his mother that he would “do great things”. Many have reached out to let the family know of how Matthew inspired them to accomplish things that they thought they could not. We trust that through his inspiration they will live their lives accomplishing great things and living their lives to the fullest as Matt did. There will be a Celebration of his Incredible Life on Friday, June 23 at the Buckhannon Alliance Church.
