Obituary of Charles Virgil Shaffer

Charles Virgil Shaffer, age 92, of Buckhannon, WV died Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at WV Veterans Nursing Facility of Clarksburg, WV. He was born June 3, 1925 in Lantz, WV, a son of the late James Francis and Lena Florence Markley Shaffer. On November 19, 1947, he married Angela Doris Bennett who preceded him in death on February 18, 2015. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one son, Charles Edward Shaffer; one granddaughter, Catherine Shaffer and one brother, Edward L. Shaffer. He is survived by one daughter, Diane Kimble and husband Wayne of Buckhannon; one son, William Wayne Shaffer and wife Sandy of Union City, PA; five granddaughters, Anna Leigh McClung of Buckhannon, Ella Marie Hicks and husband Matt of Virginia Beach, VA, Angela, Jennifer and Elizabeth Shaffer all of Union City; three grandsons, James “Jimmy” Kimble and wife Collette of Volga, WV, Patrick Wayne Shaffer of Union City and Charles E. Shaffer, II and thirteen great-grandchildren. Mr. Shaffer was a member of the Chapel Hill UMC. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII where he worked as a diesel mechanic. He was a member of the Franklin Lodge #7 A.F. & A.M. in Buckhannon, a member of the Kesling Mill Lions Club where for ten years he was the chairman of the Adopt a Highway Program, a lifetime member of the VFW Post # 3663. Before working in the coal mines, Mr. Shaffer worked as a volunteer firefighter for over 20 years and then as a paid firefighter for 15 years. Since 1993, Mr. Shaffer and his beloved wife Angela went to Wimauma, FL to camp at a Church of God campground where he later became the campground manager. Friends will be received Thursday, July 27, 2017 from 5-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Friday at the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Helen Oates officiating. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. The Franklin Lodge # 7 A.F. & A.M. will conduct Masonic Rites and the Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct Military Honors at the graveside.
