Obituary of Paul Burton Mackey

Paul Burton Mackey, age 94, of Buckhannon, WV died Friday, January 29, 2016 at his home. He was born January 29, 1922 in Buckhannon, a son of the late Roldolphus Burton and Nola Liza Slaughter Mackey. On August 8, 1947 he married Ella E. Neal who survives. Also surviving are three granddaughters, Kathy Jo Hardman and husband James Brian of Ninety Six, SC, Melissa Kelley and husband Elmer of Tallmansville, WV and Crystal Cochran and husband Brian of Kenna, WV; five great-grandsons, Joshua Kelley and wife Elizabeth of Horner, WV, Jacob Kelley and wife Kayla of Tallmansville and Austin, Brandon and Carter Cochran all of Kenna; two great-granddaughters, Kristen Villarreal and husband Chris of Greenwood, SC and Jasmine Hardman of Ninety Six; one great-great-granddaughter, Aleah Kelley of Tallmansville; one great-great-grandson, Bryar Kelley of Tallmansville; several nieces and nephews and a special nephew, Wilbert “Jim” Mackey of Buckhannon. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two daughters, Paty Ann Light and Jane Paulette Cox; four brothers, Roy, Edward, Junior O. and Wilbert Bill Mackey and one sister Gladys Mackey Smith. Mr. Mackey served in the US Army during WWII. In 1948 he started working as a police officer and then went on to become the Chief of Police, Deputy Sheriff and then a Jailor. After working in law enforcement he worked for the Buckhannon Fire Department and when he retired he was the Assistant Fire Chief. After he retired from the fire department he became a City Councilman. Mr. Mackey was also a member of the North Buckhannon United Methodist Church. Friends will be received Monday, February 1, 2016 from 4-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 1 PM Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Junior Harris and the Rev. Calvin McCutcheon officiating. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. The Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct Military Honors.
