Glen Doran McCartney
Glen Doran McCartney, age 92, of Buckhannon, WV died Monday, January 12, 2015 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV. He was born June 18, 1922 in Weston, WV, a son of the late David and Orpha Luvada Pugh McCartney. On September 14, 1942 he married Blanche Grace Helmick who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Larry McCartney and wife Patti of Buckhannon, Ron McCartney and wife Nita of Crossville, TN and Tom McCartney and wife Nancy of Jane Lew, WV; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; one brother, Stanley McCartney of Glen Bernie, MD and one sister, Anna Suto of Ambridge, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Gloria Jean McCartney; one brother, Darrell McCartney and two sisters, Donna Dantoni and Jewell Hall. Mr. McCartney was reared at Hacker Valley, WV and later Pickens, WV where he resided until his induction into the military service in November 1942. He was a gunnery Fire Direction Specialist with the 746th AAA (Anti-Aircraft Artillery) Gun Battalion of the US Army Americal Division and served in many locations in the Asiatic Pacific Theater including the Solomon Islands, Fiji Island and the Philippine Islands. He was a recipient of two bronze stars and one bronze medal. He was honorably discharged in January, 1946. Mr. McCartney was a B and B Supervisor for Chessie System from which he retired in 1984. He was an avid sportsman with lifelong interests in fishing, hunting and plant identification and location. Friends will be received Friday, January 16, 2015 from 6-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 2 PM Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Calvin McCutcheon officiating. Burial will follow in the Hampton Cemetery in Hampton, WV. Upshur County Honor Guard will provide Military Honors at the graveside.
