HillRodney Rodney W. "Rocky" Hill Rodney W. “Rocky” Hill, age 86, of Buckhannon, WV died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at his home under the care of St. Joseph’s Hospice. He was born on August 14, 1922 in Minnesota, a son of the late Maurice and Crystal Williams Hill. On January 10, 1945 he married Ruth E. Ebersbach who preceded him in death on Friday, July 13, 1990. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by brother Maurice “Curly” Hill; sister, Faye Hill Dunn; stepdaughter Lynda Cline; and grandson Rodney Dean Cline. Mr. Hill is survived by one son, Gregory Hill and wife Diane of Buckhannon; seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Rocky proudly served his country for all of his working life. He began his career serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII. He was stationed in the Caribbean where he saw action aboard a submarine chaser. He was in the Coast Guard from December 1941 to January 1946. He continued his military career in the WV Army National Guard from August 1955 to August 1975 and gained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. He was stationed at the Buckhannon USPFO. In 1975 he went on active duty and served in the National Guard Bureau in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He served in this capacity until March 1977. Rocky returned to the WV Army National Guard until his retirement in August 1984. He was made an Honorary Mountaineer Brigadier with the WV State Militia in 1985. Rocky also served on the Upshur Co. Board of Health, many terms of the Silver Haired Legislature and the WV Selective Service Board. Friend will be received Friday, November 14, 2008 from 6-9 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held 1 PM Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Damon Rhodes officiating. Buckhannon VFW Post # 3663, Frank B. Bartlette Post # 7 American Legion and DAV Chapters # 5 & 36 will conduct Military Honors. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com.
