Rev. Dr. Charles Godwin, Jr.
Rev. Dr. Charles Godwin, Jr., age 89, of Buckhannon, WV died Monday, December 24, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Hospital NCF in Buckhannon. He was born August 17, 1923 in Elkins, WV, a son of the late Charles A. and Blanche Wilmoth Godwin. On March 6, 1945 he married Wilda Moore who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Sharon Carr and husband Bob of Buckhannon; five sons, Rodney Godwin and wife Barbara, David Godwin and wife Jane all of Buckhannon, John Godwin and wife Kim of Morgantown, WV, Greg Godwin and wife Lisa of Athens, WV and Jeff Godwin and wife Diane of Buckhannon; eight grandsons, Kenneth and Robert Carr, Graham, Donovan, Jon Richard, Charles Wesley, Jordan and Ryan Godwin; eight granddaughters, Patricia Holley, Trisha Citrone, Lindsey Moehle, Natalie Eitel, Jocelyn Peters, Lauren, Susie and Emily Godwin; five great grandsons, Eugene, Tyler, Adam, Matthew and Michael and five great granddaughters, Sierra, Francesca, Genevieve, Audrey and Eliana. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandsons, Adam Godwin and Dana Carr; one granddaughter, Margaret Ellen Godwin and one sister, Alphon Conner. Rev. Dr. Godwin attended the First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon. He served in the US Navy during WW II. He received an Academic B.A. from WVWC in 1949; M. Div. Garrett 1951; DD, WVWC (where he was a trustee for 32 years) in 1965; (Service): Canaan Circuit 1946; Bishop Hill (IL) 1947; Associate First, Clarksburg 1951; Moorefield 1955; St. Paul’s, Oakland 1958; Parkersburg District Superintendent 1961; First, Buckhannon 1965; Bland Street 1977; St. Mark’s, Charleston 1982; Retired in 1989. After retirement he worked for Glenwood Park United Methodist Home, Hospice Care Corporation and St. Joseph’s Hospital. The Boy Scouts of America awarded him the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service. He was a member of the Buckhannon Rotary Club and Franklin Lodge # 7 AF & AM and other various organizations. Friends will be received Friday, December 28, 2012 from 5-8 PM at the First United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Saturday at the church with the Rev. Steven Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in the Buckhannon Memorial Park. Buckhannon VFW Post # 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post # 7 American Legion and the DAV Chapters # 5 & # 36 will conduct Military Honors at the gravesite. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Charles Godwin Scholarship Fund at the First United Methodist Church, 52 S. Florida St., Buckhnnon, WV 26201.
